Despite the lack of financial support for after school and arts programs in Ohio's high schools, the students of Athens High School have created an award winning theater club. In the Spring of 2013 the students created there own lighting systems, art work, and costumes to perform "The Wizard of Oz."
My high school did not have a theater program. If it had I don't know that anyone would have joined. Our concerns at the time, it seems, were far from academic or artistic. I was shocked, not only because of the maturity and talents of each student, but their support of each other in the face of a total lack of support for the arts, as well as what I assumed was possible ridicule by other students. Perhaps it was bitterness on my own part towards my lack of the same courage in high school that lead me to photograph them. In the end really, it was one hell of a show.
