In the fall of 2007 I moved to Tirana, Albania on a Fulbright Scholarship. I spent the duration of my time there photographing in and around Albania focusing on the social dynamics of Balkan street life. I was particularly interested in photographing people's interaction with the landscape; the built environments serving as a visual reminder of the Balkan's checkered history and which still resonate as a powerful presence. My time in Albania changed me profoundly, socially, politically, and personally. Returning in the fall of 2008 I found myself returning to a changed America as well. I struggled to reconcile my new ideas, attitudes, and relationships with the places and the people I was returning to. Subsequently, I focused my camera on the personal. I am still interested in social dynamics but my subject has shifted towards my own place in society. My relationships with my girlfriend, San Francisco, or even with my recycling have become my subject; a visual diary of my wary re-acclimation.
